Polyanskiy picks up Tiszy World Cup title

Igor Polyanskiy (RUS) claimed the top podium position in a thrilling race, winning the elite men´s triathlon final in Tiszaujvaros, clenching his first ever World Cup title. In front of his home crowd, Gabor Faldum (HUN) took second place and Andreas Schilling (DEN) grabbed the last spot on the podium. The Russian kept calm and collective during the entire race, despite the constant attacks from Faldum (HUN) to get away from him. “I sat back in the pack and had a bit of a rest so I could attack in the end, and I managed it,” Polyanskiy said. The Russian started the day with a strong swim, which saw him get away with a trio of Frenchman that included Anthony Pujades, Raoul Shaw and Aurelien Raphael. The foursome owned a 20-second advantage onto the bike, but their lead was short-lived as a pack of 18 men quickly caught up. Faldum (HUN) was the most unsettled in the leading pack. After exiting the water in 11th place, Faldum and Schilling both tried several times to get away from the pack, which they managed on the last two bike laps. “It was really tough race for me, I was not so good in the swimming,” Faldum said. “I reached them on the third lap, and after I realize how it looks like, I was at the front and just tried to break away with Andreas but it didn’t work.” “Last year I was third and now second, my family was here which is big a motivation for me and I am very happy with my result.” Schilling set the fasted time for the cycling but that might have cost him in the final run. The Danish could not keep up with Polyanskiy and Faldum and was forced to settle for the bronze medal. “It was a great race, I worked together perfectly with Gabor (Faldum) and gave everything to try to escape with him, but couldn’t do more in the end. You pay the price for that but it´s something really fun to do,” Schilling said. Schilling held on by merely six seconds to deny Tamás Toth (HUN) the last spot on the podium after the Hungarian’s excellent performance with a second fastest time on the 5k run. Tiszaujvaros World Cup heats up

Action got underway at the 2015 Tiszaujvaros ITU World Cup on Saturday with some blistering heats of semifinals action. The day began with two waves of semifinals for the women, the first of which was won by Sara Dossena (ITA) in a packed race. The Italian raced smart, completing a comfortable race in the middle of the group to take advantage of the fast pace by the Americans, who were much stronger on the swimming segment. “It was really tough, really hard race,” said Dossena. The second of the women´s semifinals saw Arina Shulgina (RUS) claim the victory ahead of Emmie Charayron (FRA) by some 15 seconds. “I come from a cold country and this is really hot weather for me, so it was really difficult,” said Shulgina of Saturday’s race. “I will try do the same as I did today and finish well (tomorrow).” Click here for tomorrow start list for the women’s final. In the men’s first semifinal, Igor Polyanskiy (RUS) led comfortably for the victory, only to be bothered by a late effort of Raoul Shaw (FRA) on the 5km run. “I felt well, and feel strong for the final,” said Polyanskiy. Felix Duchampt (FRA) took the first spot in the second semifinal in showing the French squad is here to contest the top podium positions, as the Federation saw all of its athletes through to finals in both the women’s and men’s races. “We have a very strong group with a lot good swimmers, I am a stronger runner, so will see what will happen tomorrow,” said Duchampt. “I felt strong today, and will do my best tomorrow.” Anthony Pujades (FRA) and Gordon Benson (GBR) shared the same time on the finish line, proving how close the third semifinal was for the qualification to the final. Benson (GBR), the Baku European Games winner, said, “I had fun out there today and I’m happy with my performance”. When questioned about the strategy for the final, the British remained confident saying, “You will have to wait until tomorrow and see.” Gabor Faldum (HUN) claimed victory on the last semifinal of the day on a very tight group finish, giving the home crowd a strong reason to come back tomorrow. “I really enjoy this format of racing two times in two days and I look forward for tomorrow,” Faldum said. “I think it will be hard because of the hot weather, but I will do my best to do as well as last year.” Click here for the start list of the men’s final. The women will get the racing started on Sunday at 3:45pm, while the men will compete at 5:10pm....

19th Tiszy World Cup features semifinals action

In its 19th edition, the Tiszaujvaros ITU Triathlon World Cup showcases a talented lineup for two days of semifinals and finals action. The finale to TriWeek, which is a week-long festival of multisport events including concerts and street fair, Tiszaujvaros, which has been nicknamed “Tiszy”, is an athlete favoruite on the World Cup circuit. In the men’s races, four heats of semifinals will be conducted on Saturday, with each wave going off in 20 minute intervals, while the women will be divided in two starts of a sprint distance triathlon every 22 minutes. The top seven men in each semifinal will go on to compete on Sunday in another sprint distance race, while the fastest 14 women in each heat will qualify to continue racing on Sunday. Women’s Preview The women’s races feature Hungary’s own Margit Vanek, who finished second in front of a roaring crowd here last year. Zsofia Kovacs, also representing Hungary, just missed out on the podium last year and will be hungry for a medal in front of a home crowd. Chelsea Burns and Jessica Broderick represent the top chances of the US continuing its female medal streak at triathlons this year. The 2014 Junior World Championship medallists, youngsters Audrey Merle and Cassandre Beaugrand continue to hone their skills this weekend in Tiszy. Both women are fierce down the back half of a 5km run. Women’s Semifinal 1 Women’s Semifinal 2 Men’s Preview The men’s races boast a crowd of men that have been shaking up the European circuit as of late, with European Games winner Gordon Benson slated to start. The bronze medallist in Baku, Rostyslav Pesvtsov raised eyebrows with an incredible run, will also line up this Saturday. Pesvtsov also took second here last year after Hungary’s own Akos Vanek and Gabor Faldum, both of whom will contest the event again this weekend. Andrea Salvisberg (SUI) has been making waves as of late with his swimming and biking skills, which saw him in the lead group in both Baku and the European Championships in Geneva. France has been a mainstay on the podium this year, which looks to be the case again this weekend as both Aurelien Raphael and Anthony Pujades will toe the line in a heat laced with talent. Igor Polyansky (RUS) heads up semifinal No. 1 just a week after swimming and riding with the best athletes in the world, as he made it into a lead pack of eight men that broke away at the 2015 World Qualification Event. Brazil catches triathlon mania with top athletes

Following the Triathlon & Paratriathlon Test Events on Saturday and Sunday, US and British athletes joined local swimmers for a workshop to offer training tips on Copacabana Beach in an initiative to connect with the local community ahead of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. With a massive crowd and media in attendance, the day opened with a Q&A session filled with tips from the USA’s Katie Zaferes, Tommy Zaferes, Kevin McDowell, Erin Jones, and Chelsea Burns, as well as Great Britain’s Alison Patrick, Andrew Lewis, Joseph Townsend and Lauren Steadman. The athletes covered everything from technique to training tips to sighting and more. Doctor and amateur triathlete Feliciano Azevedo said: “It was a wonderful initiative to bring elite athletes to talk to us. This brings the event closer to local people.” After the session, Jones and McDowell got the crowds warmed up and ready for a dip in the sea with a few land drills. Then they were off for a swim in the ocean! High fives aplenty, this crowd couldn’t get enough of the athletes. Luiz Lima, a coach who represented Brazil in swimming at the Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 Games, was also present, and said: “It was a joy to share experiences with the best triathletes in the world, who are fighting for a place at the Rio Games or are already Olympians. It’s a real gift for us.”

Athletes amaze at Paratriathlon Test Event

In preparation for paratriathlon’s debut next summer at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympic Games, paratriathletes tested the course on Saturday and scored points that go towards making their Paralympic dreams come true. PT4 Great Britain’s George Peasgood took a commanding lead in the men’s race, dominating both the swim and the bike legs. Remaining in a consistent second-place position through the first two disciplines, Martin Schultz (GER) exited the second transition down by 43 seconds as he entered his run. Gaining speed on Peasgood, Schultz was able to capitalize on his competitor’s weakest discipline to close the gap and take over the lead position, setting himself up for victory. Stefan Daniel (CAN) followed close behind and was able to secure the silver. Taking the bronze was France’s Yannick Bourseaux, who also competed as a Paralympic skier, proved he can excel at both winter and summer sports. “I’ll try to make the Paralympic team next year, and it’s exciting, it’s a cool city, fast course,” Stefan Daniel said of paratriathlon’s debut at the Paralympics in 2016. “I’ll be excited to compete.” In the women’s race, Lauren Steadman (GBR) commanded the course and was the frontrunner from start to finish. She led out of the water and the bike, which gave her a comfortable last leg all the way to the gold medal finish line. Behind her, Grace Norman (USA) stepped up for silver, while Faye Mcclelland (GBR) followed two minutes later for bronze. PT1 After being down in the swim, Bill Chaffey (AUS) forced a change in the leaderboard after a phenomenal bike leg that ultimately carried him through to the finish line. The four-time World Champion displayed a standout race that proved he is going to be the one to beat next summer in the Paralympic Games. Earning the gold medal with a time of 59:41. “I loved it, I could hear people shouting ‘Go Aussie’,” Chaffey said of the crowds. “I think Copacabana Beach, with all of the tourists around anyways, and then you have more people coming to support the race and it’s really, really good. I wanted to get an idea of this course. I knew it was going to be flat and fast, but there are multiple turns. Having that knowledge and knowing what I need to train for is one of the benefits, and the competition is so strong.” Setting himself up with a slight edge after his quick transition after the bike, Geert Schipper (NED) positioned himself into second place entering the...
