Paul Hawkins returns to the Outlaw

First ever winner of Nottsbased triathlon likely to be favourite for this years race

Workout Wednesday with Sandrine Benz

As the winner of the 2014 Edmonton Grand Final sprint distance race in the women’s 30-34 category and having just missed the podium in the standard distance, Sandrine Benz knows a thing or two about what it takes to balance a job & training. Check out her tips. Name: Sandrine Benz Country: Switzerland Age group: 30 - 34 Profession: Teacher How did you get involved in triathlon? I got involved in cross-country running during my foreign exchange year in the U.S. at the age of 17. After three years of running, my knees were badly hurt and forced me to stop running. After having had surgery on both of my knees, the first thing I was allowed to do was swimming. Eager to finally get back in shape, I joined a swimming club and attended their practice three times a week. Six months later, the doctor recommended that I start building up some strength in my legs by cycling. Never really having cycled before, I bought a second-hand road bike and started riding it in addition to the swim practices. At the age of 22, I was finally allowed to start running again. The immense joy of running I used to know returned quickly. Not wanting to give up on swimming and cycling any more, I decided to give it a shot in triathlon. How often do you train? Pretty much every day, often two sessions per day (either swim and bike or swim and run). What motivates you to race? I love the atmosphere at international races and enjoy getting to know athletes from all edges of the world. Another motivation of mine is to find out where my physical limits really are and how far I can push them further. Have you encountered any training obstacles? How have you gotten over them? The biggest training obstacle which still bothers me sometimes is my health. Every once in a while I have to deal with some kind of a flu or an inflamed tendon which prevents me from training. In the meantime I have learned that my body is a very smart machine and always has a reason when it forces me to rest. After having made the experience of having great races after a week of rest due to illness or injury, I have gained more confidence in the intelligence of my body. Compared to earlier days, today I stay relaxed in these unwelcome moments and trust my body that it’ll be back to full strength on race day. It works What tips do you have for balancing relationships, work and training? Associate yourself with people who also do triathlon. Casado receives TBI’s Ron Smith award

Mexico & US triumph at Havana Continental Cup

Rodrigo Gonzalez of Mexico and Renee Tomlin of the USA dominated the 2015 ITU Continental Cup in Havana, which also served as the 2015 Iberoamerican Championships. Tomlin proved to be the strongest in the 5km run to claim her first victory of the season as she completed the sprint distance in 1:04:22 hours. Fellow American Kirsten Kasper was her closest at the finish line, 12 seconds adrift, followed by Spain’s Tamara Gomez Garrido (1:04:53). “I am excited with the victory, and it sets the tone for 2015. This is a really special event, not just for triathlon but in general between Cuba and the United States, just to enhance neighbourly relations. The timing is so perfect for us to come over. It means a lot,” said a smiling Tomlin. “For me starting the journey here in Cuba was very special. I couldn’t ask for a better start of the 2015 season. More than the time, it was about the experience racing in Cuba. The flat course helped me test my race tactics and the weather held off,” she added. Challenging a pouring rain that started to fall in the second half of the bike, Rodrigo Gonzalez found an extra gear to take the title in 57:48, ahead of Italy’s Daniel Hofer (58:21) and Ireland’s Bryan Keane (58:25). Cuba’s Michel Gonzalez finished fourth. “I did not have great expectations coming into this competition considering my current form. The weather was a factor, especially with the heavy rain in the run. But overall, I enjoyed the experience and I hope to come back,” Mexico’s Gonzalez commented. The elite race, which drew athletes from 14 countries, also served as the 2015 Iberoamerican Champions. The first ITU race in Cuba since 2006 was also special with the presence of 27 athletes from the USA, both in the elite and age-group categories. “It is tremendous. We are really excited. To speak to each one of our athletes this morning, you just saw on their faces their smiles, that it was really about the experience. It is great to see Renee and Kristen finish one-two, but I think even they were talking more about their experiences around town, meeting people. It is really wonderful for everyone,” said Barry Siff, president of the USA Triathlon Federation. One month after US President Barack Obama’s announcement to re-establish relations with Cuba, the 27-athlete US delegation became the first US triathletes to race on the neighbouring island since the 1998 Pan American Triathlon Championships. ITU joins IOC in fight against illegal betting

ITU has reasserted its commitment to fighting illegal betting, match-fixing and corruption in sport by signing up to the International Olympic Committee (IOC)‘s Integrity Betting Intelligence System (IBIS). As an intelligence-sharing digital platform, IBIS will enable ITU and its members/national federations to access an extensive network of monitoring and data-sharing across sports, event owners and the major sports betting entities. The objectives set out by the IOC through the implementation of IBIS are three-fold: 1. To safeguard sports from the threat connected to illegal sports betting 2. To support international federations and multi-sport event organisers with intelligence and information exchange 3. To create a framework for transparency, confidentiality and trust across all users IOC Member and ITU President Marisol Casado, said: “ITU is very pleased to join the IOC’s proactive initiative to curtail betting in sports, which is vital to ensuring athletes have the opportunity to compete in clean environments.” ITU joins the seven Olympic winter sports federations and a growing number of Olympic summer sports federations (e.g. FIBA, IRB, ITF, UCI, FIVB, BWF, AIBA) which have already joined IBIS in view of the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro 2016. IOC Sports Director Kit McConnell said: “The IOC applauds ITU for signing up to the IOC’s initiative for clean competitions – the ‘Integrity Betting Intelligence System’ (IBIS). IBIS will be in place not only for the triathlon competitions at the Olympic and Youth Olympic Games, but also for ITU’s major competitions.” He added: “IBIS was successfully in operation for the first time during the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi with all Olympic Winter IFs taking part in the project. The objective is now to integrate all Olympic Summer IFs in the run-up to the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio.” ITU signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the IOC and implementation of the system will go into effect on 1 February ahead of the 2015 ITU World Triathlon Series, which kicks off in Abu Dhabi on 6 March.

Workout Wednesday with Ken Murley

Ken Murley is one tough dude and he has a winning age group record to prove it. Check out the Australian’s favourite workouts that have helped him to four age group world titles, two of which he earned in the men’s 65-69 division and another pair in the men’s 70-72 division this year. NAME: Ken Murley COUNTRY: Australia PROFESSION: Accountant HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN TRIATHLON: I had always dabbled in competitive sport. At school I competed in athletics, played football, cricket, swam, etc. Post school I played football, then competed in the professional ranks in track and cross country until I was about 40 years old. After that I did very little for 20 years during which time I came down with a bout of cancer. Post recovery (without any formal treatment) I decided I needed to get back into being a bit more active. So, six years ago I did an Xterra race which was great fun. After that a friend of mine talked me into getting serious about competing in triathlons. So I did. HOW OFTEN DO YOU TRAIN: As a general rule I would do between 10-13 sessions a week with a rest day every 3rd Sunday. That volume would be reduced by a couple of sessions if I have a race coming up. WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO RACE: Despite my 20 year break from competitive sport I have always been a very physical person and the 3 sports feed my current desire for hard exercise. I am lucky in that I have had a lot of success, including 5 world titles and 2 seconds, over the Sprint, Olympic and 70.3 distances; winning both the Gatorade and Start To Finish series in Melbourne 5 years in a row, plus numerous Australian and State titles in both Triathlon and Duathlon. That helps a bit with the motivation. Apart from that though, I love every aspect of the sport – from the way it is administered, to the friendships you make through racing and training, to the fact that anybody, whatever ability, young or old, can get in and have a go. HAVE YOU ENCOUNTERED ANY TRAINING OBSTACLES? HOW HAVE YOU GOTTEN OVER THEM? The only obstacles I have encountered in training are through injury. Apart from the usual niggles everybody gets I had a major bike accident 3 years ago that resulted in 8 broken ribs, a punctured lung and snapped all the ligaments holding my right shoulder together. After a week in hospital and the insertion of the usual plate to put my shoulder back together, I was sent home with the specialist’s instruction not to train until he gave me the all clear. According to him that...

Cuba attracts international crowd with triathlon

Cuba will this weekend see the 2015 CAMTRI American Cup and Iberoamerican Championships contested in Habana, offering sprint, middle and long distances races for both elite and age group athletes from January 24-25. While Cuba organized an international triathlon that was sanctioned by ITU in 2006, this race marks the first time American triathletes will compete in the country. Open to athletes of all National Federations, not only Iberoamerican countries, a total of 17 elite and age group athletes from the United States have been cleared to travel to the event making the US team the second largest in attendance. The athletes will join a short list of less than 250 Americans that have competed in athletic competitions in Cuba since 2007, according to an article from USA Today. Although Cuba has a team of elite athletes that compete in ITU races, this weekend’s international will serve to boost the sport of triathlon amongst the Cuban population. “We know hosting international races is an important and effective development tool for the sport, which is the main goal here,” said ITU President and IOC Member Marisol Casado. “This is a great project, a project of cooperation that is bringing so many different people together. I’m very happy ITU is also involved in supporting the race.” The triathlon has attracted participation from 25 countries, with Mexico boasting the largest team with more than 100 athletes slated to toe the start line. The races have been organized with cooperation from the Cuban National Federation, ITU, the American Triathlon Confederation (CAMTRI) and its member National Federations. “It was always clear we wanted to support this event,” said Spanish Federation President José Hidalgo at a press conference announcing the race last year. “We have learned a lot in this cooperation, as countries like Italy and Spain have been working with Cuba to organize the race, and how sport can bring cultures together.” “Sport is about much more than just competing. It has the ability to transcend prejudice, to move people and build relationships in a pacifistic manner,” said Spanish Director General of Sports Ana Muñoz at the press conference.

ITU gives one-month sanction to Jeffcoat

ITU has today announced it has imposed a one-month ban on Emma Rose Jeffcoat, a triathlete from Australia, after committing an anti-doping rule violation at an in-competition doping control test at the 2014 Hong Kong ASTC Triathlon Asian Cup for the use of a diuretic. Jeffcoat has already completed the length of the sanction, as it was back dated to when she provisionally suspended herself when notified of the possible violation. Although the athlete was later granted a TUE by ASDMAC for the substance, she had failed to apply for it prior to competing at the Asian Cup race. As a result, Jeffcoat must forfeit her ranking at the Hong Kong Asian Cup. ITU is strongly committed to maintaining the integrity of the sport by ensuring athletes are competing on a level-playing field by abiding to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Code to help keep triathlon clean. It encourages all athletes to be aware of everything they ingest and avoid the use of dietary supplements. Jeffcoat statement: “I take full responsibility for my Anti- Doping Rule Violation, and acknowledge that the responsibility lies with me as the athlete to check the ASADA status in regards to therapeutic medication taken. I love triathlon, and I am dedicated to keeping triathlon a clean sport, with a fair and equal field of competition for all athletes . I realise I have put my reputation and the sport I love at risk of damage, for which I deeply regret. I encourage all athletes to become familiar with the international WADA code and procedures.”

Camilla Pedersen named Danish Athlete of the Year

ITU Long Distance World Champion Camilla Pedersen this weekend was honoured with a pair of prestigious Danish sports awards. The first of the two awards, Pedersen was named Ã…rets Sportsnavn (Athlete of the year), which was decided on by Danmarks Idrætsforbund (Danish Sports Federation), Team Danmark (the organization that supports Danish top-athletes) and Jyllands-Posten (Danish Newspaper).  Topping off a night of well deserved accolades, Pedersen also received the BT Guld (Best athlete) award, which is voted on by a group of 40 Danish athletes. Not only did Pedersen become a World Champion for the first time this year, she did so after enduring a training accident on her bike late in 2013 that required her to be in an induced coma for a month with doctors doubting the eventual outcome. Pederson defied the odds and made a full recovery. Despite it all, she somehow found the energy to begin training again after her brush with death. Almost a year to the day of her accident, Pederson not only competed in, but clenched her first world title in the ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships in Weihai, China. On winning the Ã…rets Sportsnavn award, Pedersen said: “The last 16 months I’ve been through the hardest time of my life to return to the sport that I love. It wouldn’t have been possible without my family, my friends, my sponsors, my coach and all those people that last year helped me economically so that I could return to life and the top of the triathlon elite. This prize is for you. Thanks.” Following the BT Guld award, Pedersen said: “Wow. Thanks to all the people who sent a vote in my direction. I’m so happy to be back in competition. I’m happy that I now can call myself a World Champion, but what makes me proud is that I’ve been competing with such strong Danish athletes. I would like to thank all who believed in me. Without you I couldn’t have made it this far. Thanks.”

Throwback Thursday: Spencer Smith’s rewarding career

By Grady Sports Media For Spencer Smith, being the youngest men’s world triathlon champion isn’t his biggest accomplishment. Nor was it becoming the first man to win back-to-back world titles, in 1993 at Manchester, England and in 1994 at Wellington, New Zealand. Smith views his win at the 1992 ITU Triathlon Junior World Championships as the most satisfying result of his triathlon career. “I think the hardest one to win was my junior championship,” said Smith. “I could have gone to the men’s level earlier, but I wanted to win the junior championship very badly.” Smith, was born in West Middlesex, Great Britain and grew up a swimmer. But he eventually grew tired of doing laps in the pool and a friend suggested triathlons. “I was a swimmer originally but I just got bored with it,” Smith said. “My friend said, ‘Why don’t you try triathlons?’ I then asked him what a triathlon was and from there it [the love of triathlons] grew. I got on a bike and then I ran cross country in school and that is how I got my start.” After Smith won the junior championship on his third try, at the age of 19, he turned his attention to the elite men’s competition. When he won the 1993 world championship he felt like he had made it. Smith became the youngest ITU World Champion, winning at 20 years, 3 months and 11 days, just under two months younger than Miles Stewart was when he won in 1991. Smith said the championship pressures and pitfalls that plague athletes, such as complacency, affected him during the 1994 campaign. “In 1993 I had a good year running up to Manchester, but in 1994 I wasn’t having as great a year and needed a win at the World Championships,” said Smith. “At the beginning of ‘94 it was tough to get up for some races.” But the ‘94 season taught Smith some life lessons that he still employs today. “When you have already become world champion, it is hard to get up for smaller races,” Smith said. “It taught me to not get complacent. To really put my head down and just work.” The ’94 title was more important for him and his legacy as a triathlete, Smith said. “People could have thought that maybe ‘93 was just a fluke, so I think the [‘94] championship validated me as a legitimate champion,” he said. Smith has fond memories of time in triathlon. “I was fortunate,” Smith said. “I travelled the world, which is something I wouldn’t be able to do if I wasn’t doing...

Best of 2014: A celebration of 25 years

This season, we celebrated 25 wonderful, eventful and evolutionary years of triathlon as an International Federation. While the entire year was filled with phenomenal racing, one of the best moments had to be recognizing all of the movers and shakers that made us what we are today with the inaugural Hall of Fame. To celebrate them, a gala was held at the Edmonton Grand Final during which seven individuals were inducted the Hall of Fame. The inductees were narrowed down from a shortlist of 25 individuals in the categories of elite female and male athlete accomplishments, as well as lifetime achievements. For the women, Erin Baker (NZL), Karen Smyers (USA) and Emma Carney were inducted, while Mark Allen (USA), Simon Lessing (GBR), and Greg Welch (AUS) joined them on the men’s side. This year’s Lifetime Achievement award went to former ITU President Les McDonald (CAN). 25 years of sport brilliance in that photo #ITU25 pic.twitter.com/ND0J2Y5CoN— World Triathlon (@worldtriathlon) September 1, 2014 It was a fantastic night of reflection and celebration. Best of 2014: Gomez continues to rewrite history

Javier Gomez Noya has been rewriting ITU history practically from the start of his triathlon career, and this year was no different. Gomez began his campaign for yet another world title at the very first race of the year when he sprinted by rival Jonathan Brownlee on the run in Auckland. Another emphatic win in Cape Town solidified the message that Gomez was leaving nothing to chance this year. Despite both Brownlee brothers lining up in Yokohama, Gomez kept his winning streak alive for a third consecutive title. Two more podium finishes, including a win in Chicago, meant the world title was Gomez’ to lose. While Great Britain’s Alistair Brownlee returned to the top of the podium with an emphatic win at the ITU World Championship Grand Final and Mario Mola out sprinted his compatriot to grab silver, bronze was good enough to earn Gomez a fourth World Championship title matching only the great Simon Lessing. “It’s just amazing I remember my first international race in 2002. He (Simon Lessing) won the race and I got sixth. After 12 years now – four time World Champion. I can’t believe it. “I knew I had to be with Jonny all the time. When Alistair broke away it was not my role. I just stayed there and saved energy for the run and tried to secure the world title,” said Gomez. Wow, 4x World Champion…One of my best days in my career, couldn't be happier! Double happy, @mariomola 2nd! pic.twitter.com/57yJf5cmom— Javi Gomez Noya (@Jgomeznoya) August 31, 2014

Best of 2014: A WTS Series of firsts

In another claim to a slice of history, Gwen Jorgensen’s win in Edmonton went down in the books several times over. While the overall title was hers to lose headed into the final race of the season, Jorgensen was still aiming to finish the year on top. In a signature come-from-behind finish, she joined just Alistair Brownlee as the only other athlete to secure five WTS wins in one season. But that wasn’t all. It was also her first World Championship title, the first time an American was named overall World Triathlon Series champion and the first time a female had won five WTS titles in one year. It was 10 years coming but at last @usatriathlon has another World Champion thanks to @gwenjorgensen pic.twitter.com/NUAGCW3Ujl— World Triathlon (@worldtriathlon) September 4, 2014 Fellow American Sarah Groff also produced a strong and consistent season to sit just ahead of Jodie Stimpson in the rankings before Edmonton. A fourth-place finish at the Grand Final meant the Americans finished 1-2 in the rankings, which was another first just to sweeten the pot. Proud to share a @worldtriathlon podium with superstars @gwenjorgensen & @andreahewittnz. Thanks everyone for the support!— Sarah True (@sgroffy) August 30, 2014
