Rio rap session kicks off race weekend
The athletes have arrived in Rio de Janeiro, trained on the course and figured out what they have to do in order to win their nation a qualification spot. Now all that is left to do is race, and that all begins tomorrow when the 2015 Rio de Janeiro Paratriathlon event kicks off, followed by the elite Olympic qualifying race on Sunday.
In preparation for the next two days, triathletes Pamella Oliveira (BRA) and Alistair Brownlee (GBR) and paratriathletes Melissa Stockwell (USA) and Bill Chaffey (AUS) sat down with the media to discuss the upcoming competitions.
Pamella Oliveira
On competing in her home country.
“I am very excited to be here and to be racing in my home country. I am also very excited to see all of the top athletes in the world compete in Rio.”
‘On the concerns of the water quality..
“Rio and Copacabana beach is a place where we have a number of competitions and races that have triathletes swimming and tons of tourists swim in the water. Copacabana beach is one of the most iconic beaches in the world, so it can be assured that the water is safe for competition.”
Alistair Brownlee
As reigning Olympic Champion, how does it feel to be back?
“Well it is amazing that it has already been three years since the last Olympics, it really comes around fast. Obviously this Olympics I am faced with a very different challenge with it not being at home for me this time and had to travel to Rio to race on a different course because everyone has a different one of doing that but that makes it exciting and interesting, it is fantastic to be here and experience the city’s life and be able to see the course and I am looking forward to racing on it.”
On how athletes can avoid water quality issues.
“I think as far as our concerns as athletes, we are no stranger to getting asked questions about water and I think it is unfortunate that in any city, and I think this is a really good venue for triathlon, that water quality is going to get asked. As an athlete I think you can do what you can to limit problems, if you actually get ill from swallowing water after the race it is fine, it is during the race you want to avoid. So try not to spend too much time in the water beforehand if you are worried about it. And take precautions like making sure you clean off and what. I am certainly no stranger to dirty water, I think I have swam in a lot worse than this to be honest.”
On how the hill might break up the competition.
“I think this race has...

If you are giving the Vodafone Dublin City Triathlon a miss, treat yourself to some time by the sea at Tri the Hook.
How to follow the Olympic Test Events
Grab a towel, get your sunscreen, and prepare yourself a bevvie. It’s time to have a little fun with this Olympic qualification business. Set in the majestic Copacabana Beach, 150 elite women and men vie for spots at the Olympics this weekend, while all five paratriathlon sport classes test out the course in preparation for domination at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic and Paralympic Games.
What’s on the line:
Three elite men and women will book their National Federation a spot at the Olympics if they post the fastest times. But if one of those people already won their Continental Championship qualifying race, then the spot rolls down.
For example, Crisanto Grajales won the 2015 Pan American Games, which served as the ITU Continental Olympic Qualification Event for Pan American National Federations. If he finishes first at the Test Event, athletes who finish second, third and fourth, would then qualify their NOCs for the Olympics. If he finished third, the fourth place athlete would earn its NOC a berth to Rio 2016.
For Paratriathlon, the test event in Rio marks the second opportunity in a year-long campaign to score Paralympic Qualification points. These points will help determine who gets to go down in history as the first paratriathletes to compete in the Paralympic Games and who has to stay home. More here.
How to follow on site:
Triathlon and paratriathlon are FREE to watch on site. So if you are in the area, grab your sandals, pick up a hat and come join us for some fun in the sun. Thousands of beach goers will be treated to the fastest triathletes racing up and down Atlantic Avenue and all over the Copacabana area.
How to follow from home:
Due to rights restrictions there will be no live TV broadcast of the race, but TriathlonLIVE Season Pass holders can watch an hour long highlights show of the event on www.triathlonLIVE.tv (available Thursday August 13). Live coverage which will consist of live timing and social media updates will be available on www.triathlon.org/live . Columbia Threadneedle Rankings Report - Hamburg
Women’s Review
At the front of the race, again, it was Gwen… but she had to work very hard for it. The reigning ITU World Champion Gwen Jorgensen (USA) continued her exceptional run of form in Hamburg, to take her eleventh consecutive WTS victory. She has won all six of the races she has started in 2015 – only missing the Cape Town leg – and now stands alone in terms of career WTS wins (14) and total medals (17) among female athletes.
Great Britain’s Vicky Holland won the Cape Town race that Gwen missed, and in Hamburg it was Holland who really took the challenge to Jorgensen out on the run course. The five seconds margin at the finish line is the closest anyone has finished to Gwen in her unbeaten streak. Second place also represented the second career WTS podium for Holland, who also improves from tenth to fifth in the Columbia Threadneedle Rankings. With her points earned from just three events to date, a year-end World Championship podium position is still a realistic goal if she can produce strong results in Stockholm and Edmonton.
2013 World Champion Non Stanford completed a great day for the British team, bouncing back to form after a poor race in London to complete the podium and earn her first WTS medal since winning the London Grand Final two years ago.
The American team continues to impress with their strength-in-depth. Fourth place in Hamburg for Sarah True was enough for her to leapfrog over Andrea Hewitt to move into third place in the Columbia Threadneedle Rankings, with Katie Zaferes earning another strong finish in sixth, though such has been her form this season that is the first time she has been off of the podium in six races.
The biggest move up the rankings after Hamburg was from Australia’s Emma Jackson who jumps 25 places from 88th to 63rd. That said, as a multiple WTS medal winner she will be hoping for better in the remaining events than the 19th place she finished in on Saturday.
There is now an interesting symmetry in the rankings, with the top three positions in both the men’s (Spain) and women’s (USA) standings being filled by one National Federation.
Men’s Review
WTS Hamburg proved to be a memorable and historic weekend for the French team.

Vincent Luis smashes Hamburg for first WTS title
No stranger to the podium, but a stranger to the top, France’s Vincent Luis produced a remarkable run at World Triathlon Hamburg to claim his first ever World Triathlon Series title over four-time World Champion Javier Gomez Noya (ESP). Engaged in a tight battle with Gomez the entire race, Luis launched past the No.1 world ranked Spaniard in the last 300 metres, becoming the first French athlete to ever win a WTS title.
Gomez scored silver medal after falling just short of Luis on the blue carpet. But the podium placement was enough to keep his overall No. 1 ranking intact.
“It was my first victory in the WTS and the first for the French team. It’s really good for me, but really it is good for the French,” Luis said of his win. “I was really confident. I tried to attack him (Gomez), but then he attacked me. I had to wait until the sprint to set a fast tempo to make sure he wouldn’t attack me before the finish.”
Known as one of the most popular races on the WTS calendar, crowds tallying into the thousands gathered to watch the men take off in Germany.
Entering the warm no-wetsuit required waters, Richard Varga (SVK) and Anthony Pujades (FRA) set the pace on the one-lap swim at a rate fast enough to conjure up a small lead onto the bike. Together with 9 more men, which included Gomez, Luis, Aaron Royle (AUS), Dorian Coninx (FRA), Justus Nieschlag (GER), Henri Schoeman (RSA) and Tommy Zaferes (USA), the pack pushed out a short lead after the first lap.
Two men were quickly dropped from the lead pack and were forced to join the group of 30 athletes that rode a half-minute behind. That large chase group included two top runners with Mario Mola (ESP) and Richard Murray (RSA), the latter of which was served a 10-second penalty for leaving is water bottle in transition.
Although the chase contained several strong cyclists, the leading nine were able to fend off the chase and stay united through the entire bike leg. Then out of T2, Gomez and Luis blew to the front of the pack and immediately dropped their group that included Nieschlag, Zaferes and Schoeman. From there, the race became a sprint between the Spaniard and Frenchman.
Gomez took the front spot for the first lap, but it was clear that Luis was not going to back down. The fight was on for the gold as both Luis and Gomez interchangeably took turns leading the other on the two-lap run. But with about 300 metres to go, Luis produced one final kick to blast past Gomez, ultimately claiming his...

Competition stiff for Mixed Relay World Champs
One of the most anticipated events of the year is back. For the third season running, Hamburg will host the 2015 ITU Mixed Relay World Championships in a whirlwind of dynamic racing.
Just when you think the race can’t get any more exciting, something new and unexpected turns the race upside down to provide nonstop action each year.
In 2014, with nearly two million people tuning in, the British team found itself in a down to the line battle with a young French team that had nothing to lose.
With three of its four competitors then under the age of 20, the woman-man-woman-man French team challenged the Brits that included Olympic medallists Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee, proving yet again the unpredictable nature of the event.
Behind them, Hungary made its way to the podium over heralded Australian and American teams for its first ever Mixed Relay World Championships medal.
France looks to be on point yet again as they just upset Swiss and British teams at the European Championships last weekend. The reigning World Championship Great Britain relay will also suffer the losses of Jonathan Brownlee and Alistair Brownlee as they sit Hamburg out. That could mean the French will have just the extra edge they need to upgrade their 2014 silver into gold.
The US women have been unstoppable this year, and their talent will no doubt make the Americans a team to keep in check.
Likewise, Australia come locked and loaded with a massive team of athletes in the individual races, all of whom can strongly impact a competitive finish in Mixed Relay. Germany’s own athletes will be fired up to orchestrate a podium finish in front of a home crowd, while South Africa and New Zealand’s individual line ups suggest that their teams could surprise.
The athletes lining up for each team will not be confirmed until the day of the Mixed Relay World Championships.
Fast facts:
In the six years the Mixed Relay World Championships has been held, three National Federations have won titles - Great Britain has three, Switzerland owns two and Germany one.
Australia, USA, Canada, New Zealand and Italy have competed in every single Mixed Relay World Championships, which began in 2009.
Of those on the start list, only Annamaria Mazzetti (ITA) has raced in every Mixed Relay World Championships, but she’s yet to score a medal.
A total of 10 National Federations have scored medals in the woman-man-woman-man relay.

Spaniards head up men’s race in Hamburg
The Spaniards round out the first three positions on the start list after showcasing a dominating season for their country. Javier Gomez Noya returns after skipping London. He competed in the ETU European Championships, but unfortunately suffered some issues in the first transition, causing a near-bike crash and ultimately did not finish. But despite the recent loss, he reenters WTS still with the No. 1 ranked position.
Spain’s Mario Mola and Fernando Alarza are also set to perform in Hamburg. Mola is ranked second in the WTS rankings, while Alarza is ranked third. Alarza has had a really strong season so far and earned a personal best in London, when he took home the silver.
With the Brownlees both out, the path to the podium widens. Luis has also been having an amazing year with a podium in every WTS race in which he has competed in this season, most recently with a bronze medal in London as the sprint distance suits the Frenchman well.
Richard Murray (RSA) demolished the run in London on the sprint course and scored his first WTS win in Hamburg back in 2012 giving him fond memories to prop his race up this weekend. London also saw Ryan Bailie just miss out on a podium making his hunger for a first-time WTS medal all the more satiated.
But for athletes like Mola and Murray to take a medal, they’ll have to stick close to the leaders on the swim. While athletes like Andrea Salvisberg (SUI), Richard Varga (SVK) and Jonas Schomburg (TUR) tend to drop off on the run, their swim and bike have been on point at both European Games and European Championships meaning their front end speed could determine who is on the podium even if they aren’t.
Men’s Start List
The men’s race will follow the women at 5:45pm local time. Follow the races live on triathlonlive.tv and on twitter @triathlonlive.

Riveros claims Pan Am Games and Rio qualifying spot
The Toronto 2015 Pan American Games saw a fresh podium for women’s triathlon on Saturday as athletes from Chile, Mexico and Bermuda all earned first-time medals. Barbara Riveros (CHI) polished off a phenomenal run to secure her first ever Pan Am gold medal, while Mexico’s Paola Diaz and Bermuda’s Flora Duffy joined her on the podium to take home the silver and gold.
The victory for Riveros not only grants Chile a gold in the Games medal count, but it also gives Chile an automatic qualifying spot for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games next summer.
“It is very special to win it. I think the dynamic of the race just went my way and I am very glad to give this medal to my country because we do not have many medals. This is a historic medal for my country,” said Riveros.
Under sunny skies and the Toronto skyline in full view at the Ontario Place West Channel, the women’s elite race kicked off the two-day triathlon weekend and start to the Games.
Halfway through the two-lap swim, Duffy, Pamella Oliveira (BRA) and Sarah Haskins (USA) pushed ahead to create a three-man pack and exit the waters together. While in the first transition Duffy and Oliveira continued on to gain as much space as they could, Haskins waited in the zone for her two USA compatriots Chelsea Burns and Erin Jones to join her so they could ride as a team. Her patience however, added a 90-second disadvantage entering into the second discipline to the 2011 Pan American Games gold medallist.
On the bike leg, Duffy and Oliveira were about to maintain their lead as a duo for about two laps, while a chase containing 15 remained at a 60-second lead. But, a giant game of catch the leader proved strong for the pack as two laps of pushing moved them right up to the top two, causing a large front group of 17 to form. Among the contenders were Riveros, Diaz, Burns, Haskins and Melissa Rios (PUR) and Canada’s own Paula Findlay, Ellen Pennock and Joanna Brown.
The pack stayed together for the remainder of the bike and would leave the podium down to the final leg. Heading into the second transition, Mexico stood with the best chance of securing a medal as all three members of their team were among the top-eight.
Once foot hit the pavement however, Riveros capitalized on her strongest discipline and pushed to grab a nice breakaway that would carry her right to the finish line at a time of 1:57:18. Her solo four-lap run would bring her home and give her the first individual medal of the Games.

European Champs turns out allstar lineup
This weekend, Geneva has come alive with swim, bike, and run fever.
The venue is built. The systems are all working. The Age Group Sprint athletes have racked their bikes. The Parade of Nations has made its way along the closed roads close to the swim start. The Alpine horns have welcomed everyone to the Opening Ceremony and ETU President, Renato Bertrandi has declared the ETU Geneva European Championships, 2015, open. Check out what’s on point this weekend.
European Championships has a tradition of attracting the top elite athletes for the prestige of calling themselves the fastest athletes in Europe, a continent that is known for its strong triathletes. This year proves to be no different with the likes of Javier Gomez Noya (ESP), Nicola Spirig (SUI) and Jodie Stimpson (GBR) lining up. Between Gomez and Spirig, the pair own seven European titles and they’ll be looking to bump that number up even more come Saturday.
Elite Women
With Spirig having already clenched her spot to Rio with a win at the Baku European Games, we know the reigning Olympic gold medallist is in form. She is also the defending European Champ and if her total of four titles is an indication, expect this superstar to put up a fight for the top spot in front of a home crowd. Her stiffest competition will perhaps come from Stimpson, who had an explosive year in 2014. However the Brit endured an injury early in the season that has sidelined her from racing.
Likewise, Stimpson’s training partner Lisa Norden (SWE) has also battled an injury that’s kept her from running with the best. But as she proved in Baku, her swim and bike are on point, making her one to watch. Lucy Hall (GBR) will also be a woman to push the pace on the swim and bike, as is Margit Vanek (HUN). Keep an eye on Vendual Frintova, who’s been enjoying a strong season, as well as on rising stars Audrey Merle (FRA) and Tamara Gomez Garrido (ESP).
Elite Men
In the men’s race, Gomez is the hot favourite. With three European titles to his name, Gomez returns to the continental championship race for the first time since winning in 2012. Not many can match this man’s speed, but look out for David Hauss (FRA), Pierre Le Corre (FRA) and Alessandro Fabian (FRA), as well as Switzerland’s own Sven Riederer, to challenge on the back half of the race.
Meanwhile Russia’s Dmitry Polyanskiy and Alexander Bryukhankov, along with Andrea Salvisberg (SUI) and Richard Varga (SVK) have the front speed.

Edmonton Grand Final leaves women’s coach legacy
The ITU Edmonton 2014 Grand Final organising committee, in collaboration with ITU, recently awarded an eight-week coaching mentorship to a female coach from a developing National Federation, with the first scholarship having gone to Paraguay’s Carolina Rodriguez.
The scholarship was created to encourage emerging female coaches to continue their pursuit of coaching careers, an area that has traditionally lacked female representation across sport. While the committee considered a number of standout candidates, Roriguez was chosen for her ability to strongly impact the sport of triathlon in her native country.
“This is a phenomenal example of women empowering women in sports, and of the triathlon community coming together to grow our sport across the world in a spirit of cooperation and teamwork,” said ITU President and IOC Member Marisol Casado. “We need to continue to offer female coaches, athletes, administrators and officials the opportunity to succeed. I am very thankful to the Edmonton LOC for fostering this concept and proud of the ITU Women’s Committee for supporting this opportunity.”
Over the course of two months, Rodriguez lived in Edmonton to work with renowned triathlon coach Kevin Clark of the Edmonton Triathlon Academy to gain valuable insight on training elite triathletes. The scholarship was made possible by a fundraising event held during the Edmonton 2014 Grand Final Breakfast, which was hosted by the ITU Women’s Committee, and raised in excess of $10,000.
“I learned lot and there is still so much more to learn. I learned to plan workouts, as it is completely different to other sports, as well as more about high performance, technical operations and the specialization of the three disciplines. I think this time spent in Canada will mark my life in a very positive way. This new knowledge will help me reach my goals, which are to continue training athletes, attract more athletes to compete in this beautiful sport - especially women - and to share these lessons with other trainers in my country,” said Rodriguez.
Antonio Alarco, President of the Americas Triathlon Confederation (CAMTRI) said the following:
“There is no limit to what women can achieve when given the chance to fulfill their dreams. This project should be copied in different countries and confederations with one objective: gender equity.”

Melissa Stockwell steers towards Rio
The act of serving one’s country in the armed forces seems like a heavy decision for some. While honourable, brave and very rewarding, there is no denying the amount of risk that also comes with putting on a uniform to defend one’s country. But for others, including USA paratriathlete Melissa Stockwell, that decision was the easiest decision she ever made.
“I get asked a lot why I joined the military and the answer is pretty short and sweet: I love our country, I love America, the red, white and blue and I wanted to give back. So that was kind of always the plan.”
Her plan, took a more serious turn however on September 11, 2001 when the World Trade Center was attacked. Stockwell was in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program at the time, and while going to foreign soil was always a possibility, 9/11 turned it into a reality.
Stockwell was deployed into war and was stationed in Baghdad, Iraq as a convoy commander, where she was in charge of multiple vehicles. It was there that she suffered an injury that would forever change her life.
On April 13, 2004, a mere three weeks into her tour, she was on a Humvee leaving her camp when a huge explosion occurred that caused the vehicle to swerve into a guardrail before crashing into a local house. While training had prepared Stockwell for this type of situation, nothing had prepared her for what she was about to discover.
She attempted to exit the vehicle when she noticed a great deal of blood by her feet. Calling for help, she motioned over a medic who recovered her from the truck and gave her aid. It was then that Stockwell realized that she had lost a limb from the collision.
Losing a leg is devastating, and while most would consider themselves tragic, the opposite was true for Stockwell. In fact, the word she used to describe her situation is: lucky.
“I was really thankful to have my life. When I got to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center that really helped me put it into perspective because I was surrounded by other soldiers who were a lot worse off than I was—missing multiple limbs or having brain issues. So I really couldn’t say “poor me” anymore because I had three limbs, I had my eyesight, I had my mind and my heart. I really was one of the lucky ones because I had my life.”
Her loss also became the start of something she could have only dreamed of. It was not long after her injury that she discovered the Paralympics. Growing up wishing she could...
