Best of 2014: Camilla Pedersen’s comeback

Camilla Pedersen (DEN) no doubt claimed the comeback story of the year. Late in 2013, the Danish athlete endured a training accident on her bike that required her to be in an induced coma for a month with doctors doubting the eventual outcome. But with an abominable will, Pederson defied the odds and made a full recovery. Despite it all, she somehow found the energy to begin training again after her brush with death. Almost a year to the day of her accident, Pederson not only competed in, but clenched her first world title in the ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Championships in Weihai, China. “It is one year since my bad accident. I have come back and I am speechless,” said Pedersen after the race. WOW what a day, what a year!

Best of 2014: Mixed Relay magic

While Great Britain dominated the Mixed Relay to win a hat trick of World Championship titles, a crop of young talent surprised the field, torching past numerous veteran races to make this year’s race one of the highlights of the year. With three of its four team members under the age of 20, the young French team, containing Audrey Merle and Cassandre Beaugrand, the silver and bronze medallists at the 2014 European Championships and 2013 ITU Junior Men’s World Champion Dorian Coninx, provided a perfect platform for Vincent Luis to anchor home the final run and collect the silver medal. Behind them, the Hungarian team of Zsofia Kovacs, Tamas Toth, Margit Vanek and Akos Vanek all put in excellent all-round performances to claim a bronze medal. It was Hungary’s first medal at a Mixed Relay World Championships, becoming just the ninth team to reach the podium. It was also one of the most popular races of the year to watch with a record 1.61 million viewers tuning in on German television, which was 10% of TV viewers at that time. Online traffic for the official ITU website [Triathlonlive.tv] also increased significantly for the Mixed Relay race with a bump of 50% in users as compared to the last event, which was also held in Hamburg. Conclusion: the world obviously wants this event in the Olympics, and so do we.

Best of 2014: Jorgensen’s historic Chicago performance

Gwensanity exploded to another level of excellence this year when Gwen Jorgensen became the winningest female in World Triathlon Series history. While her hunt for her first World Championship title began early in the season, Chicago marked the first cornerstone moment of the year in women’s WTS racing when the American surpassed Emma Moffatt and Paula Findlay as the winningest female to compete in the Series. But it wasn’t an easy win for eventual World Champ, as she had major ground to make up after hitting the pavement more than a minute behind the leaders off the bike right when the mid-day temperatures soared. Jorgensen paid no attention to the high sun and instead fired up the quads to hunt down the likes of Helen Jenkins and Juri Ide. It took Jorgensen a little over half the run, but by the third lap it was clear that her signature run speed would lead her home to a history-making sixth WTS win. She’d collect two more before the season was done, but that run on home soil was by far one of the most memorable moments of 2014. Can't believe that just happened! Thank you everyone for the help, cheers, support! Special thanks to @patlemieux @Jayteekiwi @usatriathlon— gwen jorgensen (@gwenjorgensen) June 28, 2014

ETU Winter Triathlon Championships - Reinosa, 31st January; by Paul Groves

Just over a month to go and then we will see our first Championship event of 2015. ETU will see its first medals presented to Elite, Para and Age Group athletes. The format will be the favoured and traditional Run. Bike, Ski course but at this event the organisers are recommending that you bring road bikes. This is a departure from the normal rules of competition and a rule exemption has been applied for to the ITU Technical Committee. Road bikes are recommended as the cycle course is a climb from T1 to T2 and uses a good quality road. This is a tried and tested course in Spain and has been popular for over 20 years. Are you a Winter Triathlete ? Are you planning to go to Spain at the end of January ? Well, you need to apply through your federation in the normal manner. Where is Reinosa ? Getting to Spain is easy and once there, getting to Reinosa is easy too ! Once there you may need somewhere to stay. The LOC recommends the following hotels. All racing takes place on the Saturday 31st and all the briefings take place on the Friday 30th. Skiis can be handed in on the Friday all day. The location for the Athlete Briefing is central to the town and easily accessible from both the event hotel and from T1. The start of the race takes place in the main square. The run is three-laps of 3.3km and out on the run course a drinks station is available for each lap. Water will be provided on this drinks station. The run course is not entirely flat. Into T1 and after collecting their bike the athlete will start the climb towards T2. This is a 24km ride with a climb of some 800m The course is on roads with good quality asphalt. It is for this reason that the LOC recommend road bikes. There will be aid stations at 8km and 20km. When you get to T2 this is where you will see a big difference. The LOC have agreed to provide an “Ironman-style” T2. Upon arrival in T2 your bike will be taken from you by one of the handlers. They will rack the bike in a secure area until your race is complete. You will proceed to a changing area before collecting your skis and before you start the final section of the race. Please remember – you must not wear your helmet on the ski segment unless there is a specific direction from the Technical Delegate. Your bike helmet must be placed in your allocated position in T2 with any other equipment you do not need for the ski segment. The exact course will be published soon. Please take some time to familiarise yourself with the most...

Best of 2014: Pereira’s breakout season

With six top 10 World Triathlon Series finishes, the men’s breakout star of the 2014 season goes to Joao Pereira. While the Portugese rising star showed glimmers of brilliance with a bronze-medal finish at the U23 World Championships in 2009, he’d yet to translate that young speed to elite hardware. But this year all of that changed.  Pereira picked up his first top 10 finish of the year in Cape Town with the third fastest run of the day. With a sprint race up next, Pereira’s undeniable speed played to his favour in a big way. Despite racing heavyweights Javier Gomez and the Brownlee brothers, Pereira put on the blinders, put his head down and sprinted his way past the 2012 Olympic podium to clench his first WTS medal. Simplesmente super feliz obrigado a todos pelas mensagens e pela força, Step by Step pic.twitter.com/5jJj8mbuCU— joao sales pereira (@joao_pereira87) May 31, 2014 He then proved his bronze medal wasn’t a one-off fluke, as he nearly ran down none other than four-time World Champion Gomez himself in Chicago over twice the distance of the London course. @triathlonlive can Pereira close on Gomez here? he is flying but might run out of real estate!!— Andrew Dewhurst (@DewyNZ) June 29, 2014 Pereira finished up his season with three more top finishes for a fifth-place ranking overall for the season. Look out folks, there’s a new kid in town and he can run.

These Are A Few Of Our Favorite Jams

When I was first asked to write this post, the idea was to make a playlist of my favorite Christmas music. I soon realized, however, it would just be Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” 12 times in a row because that’s the only good Christmas song. So that suggestion was quickly tossed out.
